Professional Teeth Cleaning in Moscow
Even with careful brushing and flossing, plaque can build up in places that are difficult to reach. Over time, some of it hardens into tartar, which can’t be removed with a toothbrush.
Professional cleaning helps keep your teeth and gums healthy by removing these deposits and reducing surface stains.
At Studio 32, we use Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), a Swiss cleaning protocol developed by EMS. It combines modern cleaning technology with a personalised approach to oral hygiene, making the procedure comfortable and thorough.
Who can benefit from professional teeth cleaning?
Professional cleaning is an important part of preventive dental care, even if your teeth look and feel healthy.
You may particularly benefit from an appointment if you:
- Have noticed plaque or tartar building up around your teeth
- Experience bleeding gums or persistent bad breath
- Have stains from coffee, tea, red wine or smoking
- Have dental implants, crowns, bridges or veneers
- Wear braces or find it difficult to clean around orthodontic appliances
- Are preparing for dental implants, orthodontic treatment or restorative work
- Have previously been treated for gum disease and need ongoing maintenance
Professional hygiene can also be adapted for children and patients with sensitive teeth.
If your gums are bleeding, swollen or painful, let us know. These symptoms may indicate gum disease that needs assessment and treatment beyond routine cleaning.
What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?
Guided Biofilm Therapy is a modern approach to professional cleaning developed by the Swiss dental equipment manufacturer EMS.
Unlike conventional cleaning methods that may begin with removing visible tartar, GBT starts by identifying dental biofilm, the sticky layer of bacteria that builds up on your teeth throughout the day.
We use a special colouring solution to make this plaque visible. You’ll be able to see exactly where it collects, including places you might regularly miss when brushing.
Your hygienist then uses a combination of cleaning technologies to remove the deposits, focusing on the areas that need attention.
AIRFLOW®: removing plaque and surface stains
AIRFLOW uses a controlled stream of air, warm water and fine powder to clean the surfaces of your teeth.
At Studio 32, we use AIRFLOW PLUS powder, which contains fine, 14-micrometre erythritol-based particles. It helps remove bacterial biofilm and surface stains from natural teeth and suitable dental restorations.
The equipment allows us to adjust the water temperature, which can make cleaning more comfortable for people with sensitive teeth.
PERIOFLOW®: cleaning deeper gum pockets
If you have deeper pockets around your teeth or implants, your hygienist may use PERIOFLOW.
A specially designed nozzle directs the cleaning powder into areas below the gum line that are difficult to reach with ordinary brushing.
This technique is used where clinically appropriate, particularly for removing biofilm in periodontal pockets deeper than 4 mm and up to 9 mm.
PIEZON®: removing tartar
Plaque that has hardened into tartar needs a different approach.
PIEZON uses controlled ultrasonic vibrations to remove these hard deposits from the teeth, including areas around the gum line.
Specialised instruments can also be used around implants and certain restorations.
Together, these technologies allow us to tailor the cleaning to your teeth and gums rather than relying on the same technique for everyone.
At Studio 32, we use the AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master system from EMS.
What happens during a GBT cleaning appointment?
Your appointment follows an eight-step process. Not every step or instrument is necessary for every patient; your hygienist will adapt the procedure to your oral health.
1. Checking your teeth and gums
We begin by examining your teeth, gums and any existing dental restorations or implants.
Your hygienist looks for plaque, tartar, inflammation and other signs that may need attention. Where appropriate, they also measure the spaces between your teeth and gums, known as periodontal pockets.
You may be asked to rinse with an antiseptic mouthwash before cleaning begins.
2. Making plaque visible
We apply a harmless disclosing solution that colours the plaque on your teeth.
This makes it easier to see where bacteria have accumulated, particularly around the gum line and between teeth.
You’ll be able to see these areas too, which can be surprisingly helpful for improving your daily brushing routine.
3. Getting your home cleaning routine right
Professional hygiene is only part of keeping your teeth healthy. What you do at home matters just as much.
Your hygienist will show you any areas you’re missing and suggest practical ways to clean them more effectively.
This may include advice on choosing a toothbrush, using interdental brushes or floss, and cleaning around implants or braces.
4. AIRFLOW® cleaning
We use AIRFLOW to remove bacterial biofilm and surface stains from your teeth.
The fine powder and controlled water stream allow us to clean around the gum line and suitable restorations while minimising unnecessary abrasion.
5. Cleaning deeper gum pockets, if needed
For patients with deeper periodontal pockets, PERIOFLOW may be used to remove biofilm below the gum line.
This step isn’t necessary for everyone. If you have more advanced gum disease, your hygienist or periodontist may recommend additional periodontal treatment.
6. Removing tartar with PIEZON®
Next, we remove any remaining hard deposits using an ultrasonic scaler.
The instrument is selected and adjusted according to the areas being treated, particularly around sensitive teeth, implants and restorations.
7. Final check
Once the cleaning is complete, your hygienist checks for any remaining deposits and reviews the condition of your teeth and gums.
We may also take photographs to show you the results and apply fluoride or another preventive treatment if appropriate.
8. Planning your next visit
Before you leave, we’ll discuss how your teeth and gums are doing and whether any changes to your home care would help.
We’ll also recommend when you should return for your next check-up or professional cleaning.
Some patients benefit from appointments every three to six months, particularly those with a history of gum disease. Others may need less frequent visits.
The right schedule depends on your individual needs.
Professional cleaning for implants, braces and restorations
Dental implants, braces, crowns and bridges all require careful cleaning.
Plaque can collect around implant restorations and orthodontic appliances, sometimes in places that are difficult to reach at home.
If plaque accumulates around an implant, it can cause inflammation of the surrounding gums. In some patients, this can progress to peri-implantitis, a condition involving loss of supporting bone.
Regular professional maintenance helps your dental team identify potential problems early and keep these areas clean.
GBT includes dedicated instruments and fine powders suitable for cleaning around implants, orthodontic appliances and dental restorations when used appropriately.
Your hygienist will select the cleaning method based on the type of restoration and the condition of the surrounding tissues.
Is professional teeth cleaning painful?
For most patients, GBT cleaning is comfortable and doesn’t require anaesthesia.
AIRFLOW uses fine powder and temperature-controlled water, while PIEZON allows your hygienist to adjust the ultrasonic cleaning to the area being treated.
You may experience some sensitivity, particularly if you have exposed tooth roots, significant tartar deposits or inflamed gums.
If anything feels uncomfortable, tell us. We can adjust the procedure, take breaks or use local anaesthesia when appropriate.
For patients with significant dental anxiety or particular clinical needs, sedation may also be an option following a medical assessment.
Is professional cleaning suitable for everyone?
Most people can have professional teeth cleaning, but certain conditions may affect how or when the procedure is carried out.
- Inflamed or bleeding gums. These are often signs that professional dental care is needed. Your hygienist will assess whether routine cleaning is appropriate or whether you would benefit from treatment for gum disease.
- A cold, flu or another respiratory infection. If you’re unwell, it’s generally better to rearrange your appointment until you’ve recovered.
- Pregnancy. Routine professional cleaning is generally safe throughout pregnancy. Let us know if you’re pregnant so we can adapt your care and discuss any specific concerns.
- Pacemakers and other implanted medical devices. Some electronic dental instruments may interfere with certain cardiac devices. Tell us about any implanted medical device before your appointment so we can check which equipment is appropriate.
- Allergies and medical conditions. Please let us know about any allergies, medications or medical conditions that could affect your treatment. We can then select suitable products and adapt the cleaning procedure if necessary.

Frequently asked questions about teeth cleaning
How is GBT different from a regular dental cleaning?
The main difference is how the cleaning is planned and carried out. With GBT, we begin by making plaque visible, so you and your hygienist can see where it has accumulated. AIRFLOW is then used to remove bacterial biofilm and surface stains, while specialised instruments remove deeper deposits and tartar where needed. GBT also places particular emphasis on showing you how to care for your teeth between appointments.
How often should I have my teeth professionally cleaned?
It depends on your gum health, home cleaning routine and any existing dental conditions. Patients with a history of gum disease may need professional maintenance every three to six months. People with healthy gums and a lower risk of dental problems may be able to attend less frequently. Your hygienist will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs.
Can I have GBT if I have sensitive teeth?
Yes, in many cases. Our equipment allows us to adjust the water temperature and cleaning settings. We can also adapt the instruments used or provide local anaesthesia if needed. Let us know about any sensitivity before your appointment.
Is GBT suitable for dental implants and braces?
Yes. GBT includes cleaning methods designed for natural teeth, implants, braces and dental restorations. Your hygienist will select the appropriate instruments and techniques to clean around them without causing unnecessary damage.
Will professional cleaning make my teeth whiter?
Professional cleaning can remove many surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine and smoking. Your teeth may look noticeably brighter afterwards. However, cleaning doesn’t change the natural colour of your teeth. If you’d like to lighten their shade further, we can discuss professional teeth whitening.
Can I have my teeth cleaned during pregnancy?
Yes. Routine professional dental cleaning is generally safe throughout pregnancy. Pregnancy can also make your gums more sensitive and prone to bleeding, so continuing to look after your oral health is important. Tell your hygienist that you’re pregnant so any necessary adjustments can be made.
Can children have professional teeth cleaning?
Yes. Professional hygiene can help children develop good oral care habits and keep their teeth and gums healthy. At Studio 32, we offer a dedicated GBT hygiene service for children under 14. The procedure is adapted to the child’s age, dental development and individual needs.
Are dental hygiene appointments available in English?
Yes. At Studio 32, you can discuss your dental concerns, receive oral hygiene advice and arrange follow-up care in English.
