TMJ Specialist in Moscow: Diagnosis and Treatment
Jaw pain, clicking, difficulty opening your mouth and teeth grinding can have different underlying causes. At Studio 32, our specialists assess how your jaw joints, chewing muscles and teeth function together to understand your symptoms and develop a personalised treatment plan.
When should you see a TMJ specialist?
You may benefit from a specialist consultation if you experience any of the following symptoms:
- Clicking or popping when opening or closing your mouth
- A jaw that occasionally locks or catches
- Pain around the jaw joints, cheeks or temples
- Morning headaches or jaw stiffness after waking up
- Worn, chipped or sensitive teeth associated with grinding or clenching
- Difficulty opening your mouth fully
- Jaw discomfort that developed after dental treatment, orthodontic treatment or tooth extraction
These symptoms do not necessarily indicate a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). A thorough examination can help determine whether your symptoms are related to the jaw joints, chewing muscles or another condition.
What happens during your first consultation?
Your initial appointment involves a structured functional assessment, based on the principles of gnathology, to understand your symptoms and identify any further investigations you may need.
- Medical and dental history We discuss your general health, previous dental treatment and the history of your symptoms, including when they started, how they have changed and what makes them better or worse.
- Clinical examination Your dentist examines your jaw joints, chewing muscles, teeth and bite. This includes assessing jaw movement, muscle tenderness and how your teeth come together. Facial and intraoral photographs may also be taken to document the findings.
- Functional assessment When clinically indicated, additional tests may include a detailed assessment of jaw movements, bite analysis and digital scans of your teeth.
- Findings and recommendations You receive a written consultation report summarising the findings relating to your jaw joints, chewing muscles, bite and teeth, together with recommendations for any further diagnostic tests or treatment.
Advanced TMJ diagnostics
Depending on the findings of your initial consultation, your specialist may recommend further investigations to better understand your condition.
- 3D CBCT imaging. Provides detailed images of the bony structures of the jaw joints and surrounding areas. Available at our clinic.
- Digital axiography. Records jaw movement patterns and provides additional information for selected functional assessments and treatment planning.
- TMJ MRI. Allows detailed examination of the joint’s soft tissues, including the articular disc. Available at our clinic.
Not every patient needs advanced imaging. We recommend additional investigations when they are clinically justified and likely to inform your diagnosis or treatment plan.
How are TMJ disorders treated?
There is no single treatment that works for every temporomandibular disorder. Your treatment plan depends on your symptoms, clinical findings and individual needs.
Depending on your diagnosis, treatment may include:
- Custom-made occlusal splints. Removable dental appliances designed for specific clinical needs, such as protecting teeth from grinding. When prescribed, they are made using impressions or digital scans and may require adjustments during follow-up visits.
- Conservative treatment. Advice on managing jaw strain, clenching and other symptoms, alongside appropriate exercises or muscle-focused therapies where indicated.
- Coordinated specialist care. Our gnathologists can work alongside orthodontists, prosthodontists and a neurologist when your condition requires a multidisciplinary approach.
Our priority is to identify an appropriate, minimally invasive treatment strategy and help you understand the available options.
Before treatment begins, your dentist will explain the recommended procedures, expected number of visits and associated costs.

Frequently asked questions about TMJ disorders
Is jaw clicking always a problem?
Not necessarily. Jaw clicking is relatively common and does not always require treatment, particularly when it occurs without pain or restricted movement. In some cases, clicking is related to changes in the movement of the joint’s articular disc. A consultation can help determine whether further investigation or treatment is necessary.
Can TMJ disorders be treated without surgery?
Yes. Many TMJ disorders can be managed with conservative, non-surgical approaches. Surgery is generally considered only for selected conditions when less invasive treatments are insufficient or inappropriate. Your specialist will explain which options are suitable for your diagnosis.
How long does treatment with an occlusal splint take?
The duration depends on your diagnosis and treatment goals. Some patients may need several follow-up appointments to assess their progress and adjust the splint. Your dentist will explain the recommended schedule before treatment begins.
Can teeth grinding damage my teeth?
Yes. Persistent teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, can gradually wear down tooth enamel, cause chipping and contribute to tooth sensitivity. Clenching may also be associated with discomfort in the jaw muscles. In selected cases, a custom-made protective splint can help reduce dental damage. Your dentist will assess whether this is appropriate for you.
Can headaches be related to TMJ disorders?
Yes. Certain types of headaches can be associated with temporomandibular disorders, particularly when the chewing muscles are involved. However, headaches can have many different causes. When appropriate, our neurologist can contribute to your assessment and help determine whether additional investigations or treatment are needed.
Are TMJ consultations available in English?
Yes. At Studio 32, consultations, written reports and follow-up care are available in English, so you can discuss your symptoms, understand the findings and make informed decisions about your treatment.
